"I started writing songs as a 13-year-old on my grandfather's piano," she says. "I recorded some early demos which were pretty experimental!"
At the age of 15 she joined local Welsh band The Exit who enjoyed some moderate success in the indie charts, and supported bands like Primal Scream and The Alarm.
"The Exit were together for six years, but I had the urge to record my own material again," Kandina explains.
"I formed The Deans Daughter as a vehicle for my own songs - and was inspired by an ancestral link to Lillie Langtry, a famous Victorian beauty.
"On stage, I wore an exact copy of the black mourning dress Langtry wore in Millais' portrait A Jersey Lily."
Her romantic associations with Victoriana and heritage are audible in her compositions, which are ethereal and somehow impressionistic.
In 2005 she independently released the album Move Forward, with Back To Lillie following two years later.
